Ebay or craigslist would be your best bet. I would suggest saving up and buying one from the chrome store, they last a lifetime and are a great value!

As for the bag you really want, the holidays are coming up so put it on your list. You can also go to craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc, and get plain messenger bags and add details yourself.

It's ok that you didn't know. If you want to keep it, that's fine dear. The fact that it is second hand means that you are not creating a new demand for animal products. Remember that one of the key things is not giving the animal industry another reason to produce more animal products. By buying from a thriftstore, you were not supporting the industry. I hope I make sense.
I personally would feel uncomfortable with the fact that it is leather though. It is up to you and your personal feelings though. It's not immoral to buy something that was secondhand; the true crime is demanding new animal products.
